The sessions will give children a good understanding of how their brains work, how powerful the brain can be and how it enables our bodies and minds to do amazing things. They’ll gain a deeper understanding of their emotional landscape, recognise what triggers emotional responses and learn the skills to help manage and express their feelings. We’ll explore some of the common challenges we all encounter, look at how these challenges affect us and reframe obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning.
All sessions start with a story and are followed by creative and imaginative play-based activities, enabling the children to explore the issues in fun and practical ways. Children will use art and craft, drama, dance and role play to achieve a deeper understanding of the issues raised in the books.
Week 1: Brain science!
We’ll dissect our brain and see how it behaves very much like a muscle that can be strengthened through hard work and persistence. We’ll then make our very own brain!
Book: ‘My Fantastic Elastic Brain’ by JoAnn Deak
Week 2: I can’t do it… yet!
We’ll look in more depth at the things we want to get better at, redefine ‘fail’ and understand why mistakes are good. Then we’ll boogie on down and invent some of our own unique funky dance moves just like Giraffe!
Book: ‘The Dot’ by Peter H. Reynolds and ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ by Giles Andreae
Week 3: Curiosity and developing a love of learning
We’ll read about Little Fox’s learning adventures and then we’ll stretch our own brains and ask ALL the questions we ever wanted to know the answers to. We’ll make our own learning journal to take home, ready to record our wonderful discoveries!
Book: ‘The Archaeological Fox’ by Stuart Anderson Harris
Week 4: Plans changing and handling disappointment
We’ll discuss boundaries and why parents sometimes have to make decisions for us (why no means no!) We’ll talk about adjusting expectations, delayed gratification and dealing with frustration and disappointment.
Book: ‘I Really Want The Cake’ by Lucia Gaggiotti
Week 5: Relationships with others
We’ll step into another person’s shoes and try to understand their point of view. We’ll talk about empathy, holding space for another person and how to navigate arguments and upsets with friends using character role play.
Book: ‘Blue Penguin’ by Petr Horacek
Week 6: Training the mind
We’ll look at mindfulness techniques, tune into our inner voice and learn how to help our brain choose positive responses.
