Fridays 10am to 11am

4-week course exploring difficult feelings and how we manage them. Suitable for children aged 6 to 11.

Loneliness, worry, anxiety, fear. The current climate, the isolation of the last 6 months, the pressure of life suddenly returning to ‘normal’, the expectations to get on with life – how this is all affecting our children’s mental health?┬áMany are incredibly anxious about being thrown back into classes and activities.

These sessions will be gentle, nurturing and cosy. A shared story each week about a character experiencing and dealing with difficult feelings, giving the children an opportunity to have their own feelings explored in a safe and friendly group setting.

Join Sarah Robinson for an exploration of emotions through stories and art.

Overall theme: dealing with uncomfortable feelings (worry and fear).

Outcomes of the unit:

  • to explore feelings
  • to learn some short and long term coping strategies
  • to strengthen our self esteem through celebration of our uniqueness
  • to develop a growth mindset for future resilience

Uncomfortable feelings will be gently and sensitively explored through the experiences of some well-loved characters in children’s literature. Each session will consist of an interactive story experience followed by discussion and response (role play, dance/movement, art and craft, writing)

Inclusion is a key aspect. Sarah will work with children to explore the themes in ways that are most comfortable to them through a variety of resources. For example, a child may prefer to hold visual cards than take part in a role play activity. Learning in their own way each child will gain a deeper understanding of the themes of the book.

Core texts:

  1. Silly Billy, Anthony Browne
  2. Halibut Jackson, David Lucas
  3. Now Open the Box, Dorothy Kunhardt
  4. The Wall in the Middle of the Book, Jon Agee

Classes take place 10am to 11am on Fridays at the Outside Education Community Hub and Training Centre on Windsor Road, Prestwich.

Session dates for this course are 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd October.
